For days when your run mixes time on lighter trails with a few gnarlier, technical sections, having a shoe with versatile underfoot performance is an understated benefit. To help facilitate such everyday exploration, designers at ASICS created the new Alpine XT trail shoe.
 
In constructing the Alpine XT, designers used a new last with more room in the forefoot to allow for ample toe-splay. The midsole of the Alpine XT is constructed with ASICS SpEVA foam, which is built to provide more bounce than traditional foams. As such, it should produce a springy ride that is responsive on varied surfaces. Designers also built it to be thick enough for protection from underfoot trail hazards without the inclusion of a rock plate.
 
To generate enough grip for use on a variety of trail surfaces, designers included a large number of small lugs along the entire length of the outsole. This should provide traction without creating hot spots or pressure points on firmer surfaces.
 
The upper of the Alpine XT is made of an airmesh fabric that should promote ventilation while offering a thin layer of protection. The forefoot also features a toe reinforcement overlay to protect against abrasions and light impact. Finally, the rigid heel counter should keep feet locked firmly within the shoe without pinching.
